This week’s featured supplement: Garlic

July 23rd, 2008

Garlic is beneficial in maintaining a healthy immune and circulatory system and can help maintain normal cholesterol and triglyceride levels in individuals with healthy cholesterol levels.  Garlic is also a powerful protector against damage from free radicals, molecules that injure cells and may be responsible for inappropriate cell division and growth.

Our Kids Under Attack

July 7th, 2008

There has recently been some very disturbing news lately about the health of our young people.  Children are being diagnosed with high cholesterol!  This news is utterly shocking to me, although, I suppose it should not be surprising since so many children are overweight and eat unhealthy diets.

This is excellent news for the makers of cholesterol drugs.  Imagine, a broad new market consisting wholly of children to sell cholesterol medicine to.  I am sure they are very happy.  They can create lifetime patients who have horrible diets, get overweight early in life and are at risk for heart disease and diabetes.  Talk about job security.

How did this happen to our children?  In my opinion, it is related not to fatty diets(that is another article) but to insulin.  Yes, insulin.   Did you know that diets consisting of bread, chips, pizza, candy, soft drinks (even artificially sweetened ones), fruit juices etc cause huge insulin surges in children?  Did you know that insulin is the trigger for the liver to make cholesterol?   Yes, insulin.  Our poor children of course love sweet food. Of course they love pizza.  But when we do not feed them healthy food as the main staple of their diet, it literally makes them sick in a way that many may never recover from .   For example, on top of the already bad news about cholesterol is the “breaking”  news that our kids are now being diagnosed with the “untreatable” combination of type I and type II diabetes.   Basically, this means that they must be placed on insulin to treat the type I diabetes, but, they are insulin resistant because of their diet (type  II) so their insulin can’t help them.  So sad!!

If you would like more information on this subject or suggestions for pediatric nutrition, feel free to contact our office via e mail or phone call.

Health Thoughts

June 21st, 2008

Here are some important thoughts on health and nutrition.  Some of these are contrary to popular medical reasoning.  The usual disclaimers apply, ie: these are not intended as diagnosis or treatment of any disease or illness, but rather for your information and education. Feel free to e mail me with questions you may have and I think these thoughts from Dr Bruce West and myself are worth the time to read and consider.

 ON ACID REFLUX AND HEARTBURN

Most people think these problems are related to too much stomach acid and treat these with acid blockers.  This can make you permanently ill.  It impairs your digestion of valuable nutrients and inhibits your body’s ability to produce proper amounts of digestive fluids.  Contact our office to find out about a simple test to find out if you are really LOW  on stomach acid.

TYPE II DIABETES:

Type II diabetes is NOT due to a lack of insulin. However, most traditional doctors treat it as if it were.  What has happened is that your body has “down regulated” the insulin receptors due to a variety of factors. These include blood sugar swings associated with the common American diet and a sedentary lifestyle.  This means you have the right amounts of insulin, you just can’t get it in the cells to use it.  Simply dumping more insulin in as a treatment risks further downregulation of these receptors and as a result, you increase the risk of further inability to use the insulin you already have available.   Diets heavy on wheat, sugar and other carbs that easily convert to sugar are a big factor in the onset of this “disease.”  Many people have improved or eliminated type II diabetes by treating nutritional deficiencies including vitamin B complexes, minerals and key vitamins.  Exercise, even a weight lifting program twice weekly can help people off diabetes drugs in as little as 90 days.   We also offer herb complexes that help maintain level blood sugar, heal the pancreas (which creates the insulin) and reduce cravings for sweets and carbs.  This herb is fantastic for those of you who have that “empty” feeling and just can’t seem to get satisfied no matter what you eat.  This is usually due to a blood sugar imbalance or nutritional deficit.    Contact our office for more details.

This week’s featured supplements: Biost, Cal-Ma Plus and Super EEF

January 25th, 2008

This weeks supplements are for osteoporosis.  This tri-combination works together to rebuild bone density. Each supplement supports and enhances the effectiveness of the others. Biost and Cal-Ma Plus support bone, tooth and bone determininants. They are a good source of phosphatase for calcium assimilation. Cal-Ma Plus is a combination of calcium lactate and parathyroid desiccate which enhance the absorption of calcium in the body. The third component of this triad is Super-EEF. It helps to strengthen any atrophy or degeneration of the bone caused by osteoporosis.

Article:Vaccinate Or Go To Jail!

Vaccinate or go to Jail

Dr. Matthew McCoy editor@jvsr.com

Editor – Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research

That’s not a title just to get your attention – it’s actually what is happening in Maryland right now as you read this. As absurd as it all seems, just last week in Prince William County, Maryland, Judge C. Philip Nichols ordered the parents of 2300 children to show up in court and explain why their children had not been vaccinated, demonstrate that they had been vaccinated or subject them to vaccination in the court house. Not complying with the judge’s order would result in the imprisonment of the parents and a $50 a day fine.1

The justification for the judge’s action, who was requested to intervene by the school board, was based on truancy issues. Those children who were not up to date on their vaccinations would not be allowed to attend school and would be considered truant. The parents of those children would then be arrested for their child’s truancy. At the time of this writing no parent’s had been arrested and at lease half of the unvaccinated children complied with the judges order.

Read that again – half the parents complied. Out of 133,000 children they found 2300 who were not up to date on their shots, threatened to throw them in jail and as a result they are left with about 1000 who still have not complied. That means that 99.2% of children in the school system fulfilled the mandatory vaccination policy. That should give you some perspective on the supposed health care paradigm shift our own leadership keeps telling you is taking place in our culture. Reality sucks doesn’t it?

According to the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) many of those missed vaccinations were for Hepatitis B and Chicken Pox. The NVIC points out that the resultant hepatitis B that results from needle sharing and promiscuous sex is not something most children are getting from being in grade school. And Chicken Pox is, of course, a mild childhood disease that if not contracted when young can be much more serious as an adult. Of course most of you know that the Chicken Pox vaccine was heralded more as a convenience vaccine that would save businesses money because parents would miss less time from work from not having to stay home with sick kids. The President of NVIC, Barbara Loe Fisher, explained that people should be concerned that vaccination for such diseases is being mandated on the model of smallpox and polio.2

Maryland is similar to every other state in regards to mandatory school vaccination laws. The first state to enact a mandatory vaccination requirement was Massachusetts in 1850 to prevent smallpox.3

Other states adopted similar school laws into the 1960’s when 20 states had such laws. Measles’ outbreaks in the 60’s and 70’s led to further enforcement of these laws and an aggressive initiative to raise vaccination levels. By 2004 only 4 states did not have requirements covering mandatory vaccination in all grades through high school.4

In the landmark vaccination case - Jacobson v. Massachussetts - the Supreme Court outrightly rejected the concept of personal choice as an exemption to mandatory vaccination.5 However, every state recognizes that vaccines are not without risk and that those who have health conditions that put them at greater risk for adverse reactions should not receive vaccinations and every state provides for exemptions related to contraindications. Whether or not parents are made aware of this before they are threatened with jail is another story.6

Other reasons for exemption may include religious or philosophical beliefs and there can be various shades of grey within these. For example, some people are not opposed to vaccinations per se but are opposed to mandatory vaccinations. Or they are opposed only to certain vaccinations because they do not feel they are at risk for the disease they are intended to prevent.

Here is the most significant thing for me: While forty eight states allow religious exemptions and twenty states allow exemptions based on philosophical reasons - there is no Constitutional right to religious or philosophical exemptions. The law in any state can change at any time.

Even more infuriating to me is that there is no right to reject or decline vaccination based purely on personal choice. The basis for religious exemptions need not be based on science nor do they require evidence. One merely has to “believe” and have “faith” in an organized body of dogma.

Yet, if one did not want to be vaccinated and based that decision on a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought after reviewing all the evidence, you would not be granted such an exemption. Off to jail with you. This for me sums up how utterly ridiculous mandatory vaccination is.

Upon seeing all the upset children being forced to undergo medical intervention against their will, Judge Nichols remarked:

“Its cute. It looks like their parents are dragging them to church.”7

And he’s exactly right - they are dragging them to church.

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments and suggestions.

Moving News:

Hypothyroidism

October 18th, 2007

Hypothyroidism is a dis ease that can occur at any age.  It occurs most frequently in middle aged women. Symptoms include weight gain, decreased appetite, easy fatigue, ringing in ears, sleepy during day, sensitive to cold, dry/scaly skin, constipation, mental sluggishness, course hair that may fall out easily and slow pulse rate among others.

As a chiropractor in Asheville, NC I frequently see patients who have low thyroid function.  Often, it is coupled with low adrenal function.  The adrenals are our bodies way of coping with stress.   The thyroid  helps regulate metabolism.  That is why people with low thyroid feel tired, and people with hyper or high thyroid, often feel wired.

What does one do about hypothyroidism?  First you must have determine the extent of the problem.  In our office we offer testing to determine thyroid function.  The testing is simple and reasonably inexpensive.  The medical community can consider hypothyroidism to be of little or no concern.  A common medical solution is to  simply give more thyroid hormone for it.  Whether it is natural replacement or asynthetic replacement like Synthroid, these hormones are powerful and can shut down the thyroid’s natural production of natural thyroid hormones.

The approach I prefer is to evaluate thyroid and adrenal function, work with stress and supplemtation that helps the body deal with stress and rebuilds the natural function of the  thyroid.  The patient may need to improve their diet, increase exercise and  conquer sugar cravings.  These natural approaches are not always easy! With this natural approach to hypothyroidism, many patients become quite healthy, feel better, have more energy, beging to lose weight and regain  stress handlinig ability. All this without the prescription for additional thyroid hormone.

In our office we will not make a medical determination or treat the hypothyroid disease. We can however assist with reasonable assessments and nutritional supplementation.
