Cut Your Risk of Flu In Half!

Did you know that you can cut your risk of catching the flu almost in half?

Vitamin D fights flu

No we are not talking about the flu shot here folks. We are talking about a vitamin. Are you surprised? We were. In this day and age where flu shots are offered in drug stores, grocery stores, libraries and are practically mandated as law, those of us more interested in a natural way to avoid the flu were happy to hear about this surprising finding.

First let me say, that the flu or any other contagious illness is most easily avoided by healthy lifestyle, healthy diet and proper stress and nutrition levels.

When 5 people are in the same room with someone with a cold, why is it that only one of them catches it? I am sure you have seen this before. The person most at risk is the one with the weakest immune system. After all, it is our immune systems that defend us EVERY DAY against germs and viruses that constantly surround us.

How can we support our immune systems? Chiropractic care on a regular basis has been shown to boost the patients immune system about 200%. Proper rest, hydration (especially once the heat comes on) diet and nutrition can help tremendously. Flu shots to be honest, have mixed results and at best help only then if officials have guessed at the proper strains to protect us from about a year in advance. When you configure the added chemicals like mercury, formaldehyde and anti freeze that are being injected into our systems, how can this make us more healthy ultimately? It has been shown that even catching the flu can protect us naturally against deadly strains of flu and make us less likely to catch the flu in future years. See our article on this subject here.

Now, what is that vitamin that can cut your risk of flu almost in half?  Vitamin D. Most Americans are defficient in Vitamin D and it is critical for our mood in the winter as well as our immune systems. According to Dr Mercola:

“According to the findings from a 2010 study that didn’t get any widespread attention, vitamin D is a highly effective way to avoid influenza.

In fact, children taking low doses of Vitamin D3 were shown to be 42 percent less likely to come down with the flu.

The randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study included 430 children aged 6-15, who were followed between December 2008 and March 2009.

Half were given 1,200 IU’s of vitamin D3 daily, while the other half received a placebo.

Influenza strains were determined through lab testing of nose and throat swabs.

Eighteen of the children taking vitamin D contracted influenza Type A, compared to 31 children in the placebo group.

Type B influenza rates were unaffected by vitamin D use, however, the illness resulting from Type B influenza strains is typically milder than Type A.

Considering the fact that influenza was reduced by 42 percent at a dose of just 1,200 IU’s a day, it’s possible that even better results might be obtained with higher dosages—depending on just how deficient you are to begin with, of course, because it’s not really the dosage that matters; it’s the amount of vitamin D in your blood.”

In addition: Standard Process Cataplex D supports bone health, mineral absorption, the immune system, and cellular processes.

  • Encourages healthy calcium absorption from the intestinal tract into the blood
  • Supports a healthy immune response
  • Supports and maintains healthy bone density
  • Needed by almost every cell in the body for development and transcription

So, lets do what we can to avoid getting the flu this winter. Eat right, drink lots of water, take your vitamin D and get ADJUSTED!

Our office will be running a great special on Vitamin D beginning in January. Keep your eyes on our posts on Facebook and Twitter!

Heavy Bookpacks Are Potential Trouble for Young Students

It is that time of year again.  You know, the back to school season. Students will be heading back to school with fully stuffed and heavy backpacks.  If it were not bad enough, with the epidemic of bad posture these days, adding an overly heavy backpack to the mix can be unhealthy to say the least. Chiropractors are well equipped to understand and help with the problems, pains and injuries of heavy backpacks.  The best thing is to avoid the injury in the first place. Ideally, the maximum weight in the backpack should be no more than a maximum of 10-15% of body weight. This means that  for an 80 lb. child, the pack should weigh no more than 8-12 lbs! The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that back packs that are too heavy Filling A Heavy Backpack or incorrectly worn may injure a child’s muscles and joints. A team from the University of San Diego School of Medicine tells us that the way loads are distributed under the backpack straps can isolate causes of shoulder and back pain in teens and children.   Too much pressure on the shoulders from heavy backpacks may cause shoulder pain and even low back pain prompting a call to the chiropractor.  Most health officials agree that the load of heavy backpacks should be reduced. We all know most children and teens carry packs that are too heavy and it is not healthy.  Backpack manufacturers are now designing backpacks that are more ergonimically correct.  They are making wider straps, adding more padding and adding straps that can pull the load closer to the center of gravity. Also waist straps are a valuable addition so that some of the weight can be carried on the waist instead of  just the upper back and shoulders.  However, buyer beware.  Just because a backpack may be designed with popular cartoon characters or have an attractive color or style, it does not mean it meets healthy standards. Here are some things to consider when choosing a school bookpack. Wide, padded shoulder straps Two shoulder straps Padded back Waist level straps To prevent injury: Use both straps. Make backpack as light as possible by leaving books in lockers or having 2 sets of books. Backpack should rest no further than 4 inches below the waist. Stand straight, do not lean forward when carrying. Carry no more than 10-15% of your body weight in the pack. Carry the heaviest books in the part of the pack closest to the body. Keep the weight of the pack to 10% of body weight. (a 150 lb student’s pack should weigh less than 20lbs.) How parents can help: Encourage your child or teenager to tell you about pain or discomfort that may be caused by a heavy backpack. Do not ignore any back pain in a child or teenager. Consult with a chiropractor if in doubt. Talk to the school about lightening the load. Be sure the school allows students to stop at their lockers throughout the…

Insomnia a surprising cause

Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Do some research and you will find unlimited suggestions on how beat insomnia and to fall asleep and stay there. You probably know them by heart now.  Go to bed at the same time each night, make sure your room is dark enough, don’t be on the computer after a certain time, watch your consumption of caffeine during the day etc etc. but you do all this and you still have trouble sleeping. If you do not have a specific medical condition causing your insomnia, your answer might lie in a glass of water.  Did you know that getting enough water can make a big difference in how you sleep? Yes, dehydration can cause insomnia. If you do not have enough water in your body, it can cause your heart to beat faster and harder. This is one effect of dehydration and it will keep you awake.  First, follow all the rules above, especially the ones about caffeine during the day, give it up. Then, in the evening at least 3 hours before you go to bed, try drinking one or two tall glasses of water. You may also try keeping a glass of water by your bedside and sipping on it if you wake up and can’t go back to sleep. Of course, if you drink too much or too late, you will be up visiting the restroom all night, that isn’t good either so vary how much you can drink at what time to solve this problem. Try this simple solution and let me know your results. You may be pleasantly surprised with a good nights sleep.

Safe Gardening 101

It is getting that time of year when we start planting our summer gardens.  Having a garden is not only great for nutritional reasons, it is a great way to get some daily exercise.  Did you know that, according to www.medicalmoment.org, you can burn 236 calories per hour while gardening?  That is considered a moderate physical activity level. Lets make sure you are gardening safely and keep emergency chiropractic visits out of the picture. There are many benefits to gardening, but it needs to be done in a safe manner.  Knowing the proper way to lift, bend, weed, and dig are very important to keeping your back in good shape. When lifting, bend at your hips and knees, not with your spine.  Kneeling is safer than bending over to pick up a bag of soil.  When in doubt, ask for help.  It is much safer to lift an object with two people than trying to lift it yourself. When lifting a wheelbarrow, lift with your weight below the wheelbarrow.  Using an underhanded grip is advised. Use your weight to help you lift, rather than just your muscles. When bending, keep your back straight.  Bend at your knees and hips, rather than the middle of your back.  Keep your head up. When weeding, try using a bucket to sit own.  If you have hip, knee, or back pain, using a bucket or stool can help take the pressure off of these areas.  When weeding, sit with a wide base (legs spread) and support yourself when bending. When digging, use your weight as leverage.  Also, when dumping the dirt, turn your whole body instead of twisting your back.  Keep yourself in alignment.  Spacing out digging with other tasks will also help to keep the strain off of your back. Keep well hydrated.  In this heat, drinking plenty of water is key. Following these simple tips will not only make gardening easier, it will also make it more enjoyable by avoiding those nagging aches and pains.
